Sexual offences against minors could be attributed to the internet, says Deputy Secretary for Defence Ilai Koroimoceica.

Speaking at the first consultative workshop on “Address sexual violence through smart censorship”, last Friday, he said Internet had shaped “our culture, media, commerce, entertainment and communication.

“The possibility of accessing adult sites by anybody is inevitable as any search word associated with it would definitely lead anyone to these restricted websites,” he said.

“Gone are the days where adult publications are restrictive for its sale.”

Mr Koroimoceica said today any child or minor could access these adult sites through mobile phones and other gadgets.

“In the modern world, the computer has literally revolutionised our society and generally changed the way we think and live,” he said.

“Although it has not been proven that pornography is directly associated with sexual crime, the type of scenes, style and setting creates an environment of meditation and fantasy in a viewer to crave for the same amount of satisfaction as falsely portrayed.”

Mr Koroimoceica said the vulnerable in our society were becoming the victims of rape, defilement and unbecoming practises such as incest which could be attributed to the internet.
