Nadroga Rugby Union president Jikoibau Matawalu is now appointed as the interim administrator of the Nadroga Football Association.

Matawalu confirmed yesterday that his appointment came from a Fiji Football Association executive meeting at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, last month. He is the first sports administrator to hold both positions at one time.

“It’s going to be a great challenge because football is one of the world’s biggest sports,” he told SUNsports.

“So when Fiji FA appointed me, I was ready to take the challenge. The appointment was in July because they needed good administration in the running of the sport in the district.”

When contacted Fiji FA chief executive officer Bob Kumar said Matawalu is now in-charge of the district’s football affairs.

“We have appointed him as an interim administrator to run Nadroga Football and in a few months time we will hold an annual general meeting and elections of office bearers.

“Matawalu is going to contest and is likely to become the confirmed president for Nadroga Football.”

Kumar said it is after a long time that a iTaukei is now heading one of the Super Premier districts.

He said the last one was former national football defender Maritino Nemani when he headed the Suva Football Association.

Matawalu said he is holding on to both positions as Nadroga Rugby are the holders of the Skipper Cup and the HFC Bank Farebrother Trophy

“Football needs good administration as it can bring glory to our country.

“The main focus now is to find the right structure and the right people in the NFA who can develop the team to go a long way,” he added.
