The crown of being the Olympic rugby sevens champions sit well in this country, says for former Flying Fijian skipper.

Greg Smith made the comments following the victorious Olympic gold medal celebration in Suva on Monday.

Smith is in the country representing Waikato Institute of Technology for the World  Technical Vocational Education and Training Conference the first ever Conference to be held in Fiji and the Pacific Region.

Speaking to SUNsports, the former national rugby hooker indicated the win has made him proud to be a Fijian.

“A huge congratulations to the team and everyone behind them. To the captain and coach and all the players who were part of the journey that they went to. It’s incredible for Fiji, it was the best day in Fiji Rugby and I was very proud to be a Fijian.

“A big vinaka vakalevu to the team and the whole country was very proud which is an amazing result,” he said.

Smith also praised the work of sevens maestro and former team mate Waisale Serevi for paving the way forward.

“Waisale is a very special man and I was fortunate enough to play with him in 15s and it’s a first thing being a key man and getting involved in the Olympics. It turns out that Fiji is the Olympic champions. It’s a blessing and it’s a great link. The work that was done by Waisale in the start has certainly paid off for Fiji,” he said.

Smith was the first Fijian rugby player to coach the Black Ferns to last year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup.
