Team Fiji men’s rugby sevens forwards Semi Kunatani and Leone Nakarawa along with team manager Ropate Kauvesi arrived at Nadi International Airport yesterday. Speaking to SUNsports, Kauvesi said there was nothing sinister about their late arrival.

“All I can say there is nothing to jeopardise Team Fiji’s name or Fiji Rugby,” he said.

“Unfortunately people do see things and things do happen but we were glad to close off the Olympic ceremony and we enjoyed it. It was the first time for these boys and the first time for them to win gold. We were fortunate to see off the night with Leslie Copeland and the rest of the gang that are still there.”

Kauvesi said they were a bit sad to have missed the celebrations in Nadi and Suva.

“But then again Olympics come once in a life time and we have to wait for another four years and these guys are not sure whether they will be there in 2020.

“We have been following the celebrations on live stream thanks to TFL and FBC for putting it up because it made us closer to the boys in terms of communication.

“We are thankful to them for making it happen and we are proud that we have achieved what we wanted to achieve and we thank everyone that was involved and most of all we thank our Father in heaven for helping us out.”

SEMI KUNATANI

Navosa native Kunatani, who is dubbed the Beast, said he is happy to be back home.

“Even though I didn’t join the team during the celebrations here but I did enjoy it back in Rio.

“I was glad that I attended the closing ceremony together with Leone and the rest of the crew there,” he said.

“For now I will head home and rest for a while before I return to France.

“If I get that chance of joining the Fiji sevens team again I’m happy to do so. Working with Ben Ryan has really been a boost for me, he had really taught me well. Ryan has said that he is going to leave but as a player I wouldn’t want him to leave.”

LEONE NAKARAWA

Nakawara thanked all team supporters who turned up to receive them.

“Their arrival at the airport today is a boost for us and I thank them for that,” he said.

“It has been a while I haven’t been with my family so I will try and spend some time with them before I go back to France.

“It will be tools down for me and I encourage all rugby fans to keep on supporting Fiji.”
