Nova Engineering Limited Suva counted their lucky stars as they drew 4-4 against Jaduram Investment Limited Dreketi in the INKK Mobile Battle of the Giants opening round at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori yesterday.

Comments:

Despite the slow start by the capital side, Suva coach Gurjit Singh said they cannot afford to play catch–up football as they anticipate another tough game today against Rewa.

“We didn’t start well but after a few changes we picked up in the second half after being down 4-1 and coming back to score three goals. It was a great effort by the players,” Singh said.

“Fitness- wise, we did not prepare well because of the wet weather but I am sure they will lift their performance in the next game.

“Dreketi was a tough side and we made a lot of mistakes which they capitalised on.

“It is very important we get three points in second game so we need to go back to the drawing board and fightback.”

Meanwhile, Dreketi team manager Amitesh Karan said though they gave away the game being 4-1 ahead, the underdogs will be looking for a win when they take on Nadi today.

“Against an experience a side we played really well with our young side,” Karan said.

“Dreketi is not a side for anyone to underestimate.

“We will come back even stronger in our second game.”

What happened:

Dreketi applied pressure in the first 10 minutes with Peni Sokia scoring the first goal of the tournament catching Suva goalkeeper Benaminio Mateinaqara off guard, 1-0. A minute later, Suva’s Kelvin Baidu equalised with a bicycle kick inside the box, 1-1.

Both teams defended equally well. Dreketi finding it hard to find a gap through the Suva defence.

In the 26th minute, Sokia scored again from a free kick to put Dreketi in the lead, 2-0.

Suva’s defence was tested as they struggled to keep Dreketi at bay. Dreketi continued to marvel the crowd as Ashnil Raju scored another goal to extend their lead.

Halftime: Suva 1-3 Dreketi

Suva started off the second spell with a disappointing penalty kick from Setareki Hughes which hit the bar. Dreketi on the other hand made good use of the possession with Sanaila Waqanicakau scoring the fourth goal, 4-1. Suva tried hard to find their form but their poor finishing prevented them from doing so. Dreketi held their defence well with their goalkeeper Ronald Kumar putting in the hard yards. Samuela Drudru scored the second goal for Suva to close gap as Dreketi struggled to defend, 4-2. Towards the final minutes of the game, Hughes scored two goals to level the score 4-4.

Big Play

Suva made a comeback from being 4-1 down capitalising on Dreketi’s basic mistakes.

Star turn

Dreketi’s Peni Sokia is a man to watch in the next few days.
