Aliya Dean was elated when she visited Labasa sugar mill for the first time on Wednesday.

Ms Dean, 18, a Queen contestant for the Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North, said:  “It was great learning experience.”

She said it was an honour and privilege to understand what went on in the sugar mill as her grandparents had been cane farmers.

Ms Dean said her grandparents, of Seaqaqa had been farmers for all their lives and the sugar industry had been their livelihood.

“I only understood the sugar industry from a farmer’s perspective but now I’m proud to say, that I understand the whole process and just what makes the industry tick,” she said.

“I have learnt a lot during this short, yet enlightening visit. It also makes me proud and happy to know that FSC remains as one of the largest employers on Vanua Levu,” Ms Dean said.

“I am also thankful to FSC and the Festival Friendly North Committee for giving us this opportunity to learn about such things.” Ms Dean represents Nation Wide Travel Services Limited.

King Contestant, Mr Jimmy’s Service Station, Waisake Vuetimaiwai, who is an automotive engineering student at the Fiji Technical College in Labasa, said he now planned for an attachment at the mill.

“I am so much interested to work here now, and I would like to carry out my practicum here,” Mr Vuetimaiwai said.
