Karishma Nand remembers life was tough at the Vatukoula Gold Mines when her father lost his job.

She was in Year 8 and they had to struggle as a family to survive.

That’s history now as Ms Nand, 22, yesterday graduated with a Bachelor’s in Commerce majoring in Accounting and Economics at the University of the South Pacific.

She dedicated her success to her parents.

She said life was difficult when her father, Satish Nand, 54, lost his job.

“I worked really hard that year to get a Multi-Ethnic scholarship to loosen the financial burden from my parents,” she said.

“When I got my scholarship, my family was happy for me and I was excited to experience living independently.”

Ms Nand, who is from Toko Village in Tavua, said university life had its share of challenges.

“I had difficulties with my accounting course and I’m thankful to the tutors and the learning support centre in USP for making sense of lectures,” she said.
