Sekope Cama is a proud man today after being very much part of the gold medal win at the Rio Olympics earlier this month.

Many eyes were glued on head coach Ben Ryan and his boys after the Rio win but there were people working behind the scene helping to get the boys in good shape.

Nasau, Moce, Lau native Sekope Cama is one of them.

Cama’s job is to ensure that the team is hydrated everyday by collecting 100 bu (coconut juice) for the players. The team used the bu as a substitute for Powerade. The Lau native is a staff at Uprising Beach Resort.

“When the team started camping here, my job was to provide bu for them, they drink bu instead of Powerade.

“The team drank bu twice a day after their morning session at 10am and in the afternoon at 5pm,” Cama said.

The 30-year old said every night he sleeps, he thinks of coconut trees to get bu from the next morning.

“I was proud of what I was doing because I know I’m not only doing this for the boys but for the nation, helping the management to try and fully equip their preparation.

“I also want to thank the Oceania Club Hotel here at Pacific Harbour for allowing us to get the coconuts from their compound during the final weeks of preparation when we were running out of coconuts in this area,” Cama said.

“I’m proud to be part of this gold medal win.”

Uprising Beach Resort owner Rene Munch also made a special mention of Cama during his speech to the people of Serua yesterday during the traditional thanksgiving ceremony for Ryan.

“You are all sitting here where our world champions sweat and sacrificed.

“Uprising is proud and grateful to host this historic event and when I say Uprising, I’m talking about the people, my hard working resort staff.

“The two young boys who looked after the gym, Sekove who provides fresh bu everyday for their training,” Munch said.

“Fiji thank you Ben, Serua thank you, Uprising thank you.”
