The crews of the Tongan vessel, MV Sitka have left Kabariki village in Kadavu and are believed to be in Suva.

Kabariki village headman (turaganikoro) Mr Waisale Ratudina told the Fiji Sun that he fareweled them at Tavuki jetty last Friday where they boarded the Lomaiviti III bound for Suva.

He said the crews – Viliani Tuputupu (Captain), Tupou Veaomueta (2nd Mate), Fapui Aki Moala (1nd Engineer), Tevita Lavaka (2nd Engineer), Lopeti Afu (Oiler) and Sekona Hoko (Able seaman) were at the village when the MV Sitka ran aground on a reef just near the village.

Mr Ratudina said it was a real pleasure for them to host the Tongans and they were very friendly.

He said from what the captain told them, they were sailing to the Solomon Islands but he said he changed the course to come to Fiji as it was nearer to the Solomon Islands. The ship had an engine problem and was floating when it stuck a reef near Kabariki village.

This vessel he said was sold to a businessman in the Solomon Islands.

He said the ship’s captain said all the crews were to board their vessel in Tonga when they arrived back as they were all on leave.

Mr Ratudina said the vessel was still on the reef.
