Six Appear Before Court For Drug Possession

A group of six men charged with possession of illicit drugs appeared at the Lautoka Magistrates Court yesterday.
Titus Nair, 51, was found in possession of 814.2 grammes of cannabis, while Sitiveni Uluinavucu, 33, was found in possession of 1.8 kilogrammes of cannabis at Nair’s home in Tavakubu, Lautoka on August 30.
The third accused Syed Mujahid, 36, was found in possession of 14.1 kilogrammes of cannabis. Two others Jone Anu, 31, and Apete Salabula, 28, were also charged for the same and appeared before Rangajeeva Wimalasena.
They were arrested following a drug raid at the house of Nair on Tuesday by a team of Police officers.
Nair and Mujahid are represented by their counsels, Kevueli Tunidau and Mark Anthony and are expected to make bail applications today.
The counsels asked the court if the cases could be transferred to the High Court without a waste of time, however, prosecution stated there was no such jurisdiction indicating that sentencing could not be heard at Magistrates Court.
However, because of the unpreparedness of the case from the prosecution Magistrate Wimalasena said the matter would be called today due to the seriousness of the case.
Another man, Peter Foster who was an employee of second accused, Uluinavucu, the proprietor of One Connection in Lautoka was charged separately for being found in possession of 33.6 grammes of cannabis.
Foster pleaded guilty to his charges and will appear in court on September 5 for sentencing.
