Vodafone Fijian 7s rugby head coach Ben Ryan flew out of the country yesterday as his contract with the Fiji Rugby Union expires today.

FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor said after their discussions with Ryan on Thursday night and again yesterday morning the position of Fijian 7s Head Coach would be advertised locally and overseas as well.

O’Connor said Ryan is most welcome to reapply for the position should he have a change of heart.

“The Fiji Rugby Union board would have been most glad to renew his contract but they had to respect his decision,” O’Connor said.

“The discussions with Ben indicate his desire to take a break from rugby by returning home to England and to explore options for his future undertaking. We would like to wish Ben and wife Natalie safe travels as they depart our shores to return England.”

FRU board chairman Francis Kean said the position of Fijian 7s Head Coach would be advertised with the appointment to be made well before the commencement of the 2016/17 World Sevens Series.

“Ratu Peni Raiyani (Ryan) will also assist us in the selection of the new coach and is going to discuss with him (new coach) on the players he could take on the first leg of the series,” he added.

Meanwhile, O’Connor said that Fiji Women Rugby Head Coach’s position is going to be advertised as well after Chris Cracknell had advised them that he wants to move on to new challenges.
