A High Court in Suva judge says life is precious and there is no justification to take someone else’s life.

Justice Salesi Temo made the remarks when he sentenced Bernard Hicks to life with a minimum term of 16 years to be served before a pardon can be given by the President.

Hicks had pleaded guilty to the murder of his 33-year-old de facto partner, Lavenia Radinitavea.

The incident occurred on May 1 at a Suva apartment where Hicks was a driver.

Hicks took a kitchen knife and stabbed Ms Radinitavea several times underneath the right arm in the right chest area which caused serious internal injuries causing her death.

He had left her in a pool of blood and went to the Police station opposite the Suva Bus station to report the matter.

The court heard that Hicks was under the impression that his de facto partner was having an affair.

Justice Temo said: “You were driven out of jealousy but your problem could have been solved peacefully.”
