Six homes in Ba have been rebuilt by the Soroptimist International (SI).

This was confirmed by project co-ordinator Dr Maria Doton.

She said Soroptimist International of Ba started their ‘Rebuilding Homes, Rebuilding Lives’ project in August.

This project was launched earlier this year in co-operation with the Queensland Disaster Relief Group headed by Umesh Chandra.

“They have handed over more than $53,000 to start the project,” Dr Doton said.

“This initiative was followed by the Australian High Commission Social Club holding fundraisers and raised $4560.”

According to Dr Doton there were 44 homes visited and assessed by the SI Ba members.

“Out of these applicants, they have worked to prioritise those families that are really in need and no one to rely on for help,” she said.

“At present there are six homes being rebuilt by the organisation.

“The delay in implementing the project is mainly due to the lack of building materials and shortage of contractors.

“Soroptimist International of Ba hopes to assist as much families who are in need as soon as possible,” Dr Doton said.

Furthermore, Soroptimist International Ba has donated computer, printer, books, toys, school things and food to Ba Special School as part of their Cyclone rebuilding programme.

The event was officiated by the chief guest SI Hobart member, Leanne Chrisholm where she praised the members for the desire to make changes in the society.

Meanwhile, SI Lautoka club also continued providing assistance to families around Lautoka who are still without electricity after Cyclone Winston.

“Solar lights have been donated by SI HQ in UK as an extension of See Solar Cook Solar Project,” executive Zareena Bi said.
