The second eldest of seven children, Semi Ravai had dropped out of school at 15 to attend to his ailing father. He had vowed to assist his mother in sending all his other siblings to school while he stayed home.

It was not until 15 years later that he was granted a chance to return to school  and pursue his dreams after the opening of the Ratu Ilisanita Malodali Technical College this year.

“I left school after form three as my father was suffering with a knee problem and I realised I had to stay home to help my mother,” Mr Ravai said.

“For the past years, I have been a fisherman, farmer and a keen family man ensuring that all is well within our household.

“As a result, my father has recovered well over the years and I had plans of going overseas as a part of the Seasonal Workers Scheme so I can travel the world and also earn for my family.

“After approaching the National Employment Centre in Suva, I was told of this programme where I could first earn a trade while waiting for their recruitment.”

The 30-year-old, who is pursuing a Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery, said the school had opened new horizons for him as he thought village life was what he was destined for.

“I love school now as they are teaching me something which I can relate to and understand easily,” Mr Ravai said.

The Lakeba, Namuka in Macuata native said his lessons were in sync with his life in the village as he was able to carry out carpentry work in his home.

Mr Ravai is one of 89 students currently enrolled in the technical college.
