The Lautoka football team are determined to break a 31-year-old jinx at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori today. The Peni Finau captained- Lautoka side take on Labasa in the final of the INKK Mobile Battle of the Giants tournament. The last time Lautoka won the prestigious B.O.G title was in 1985 when they beat Rewa 3-0 at the National Stadium, Suva.

On paper, the Blues are favourites to equal that feat this afternoon as they have beaten Labasa 4-2 during their pool clash last weekend.

A confident Lautoka coach Aginesh Prasad told SUNsports last night that they are going for a win.

“We want to make our fans back home proud,” Prasad said after their 4-3 penalty shootout win over Rewa in the second semi-final.

“We will go back to the drawing board and see if there are injuries with our players. We will do all our checks and structure the team accordingly and we should come out firing against Labasa.”

Labasa goalkeeper Akuila Mateisuva said they are looking forward to the final as they respect Lautoka for being unbeaten so far in this year’s B.O.G competition.

“Lautoka will be a tough side and we are looking forward to the final even though we do not have a coach but we believe in God who is going to make things possible for us,” Mateisuva said. Labasa came from behind to beat Suva 4-1 in the first semifinal. They last won the B.O.G in 1997 when they beat Nadi 1-0 at Subrail Park, Labasa.

Today’s final kicks-off at 3pm.
