Nasinu Turnout Awes Tuwai

Olympic rugby sevens gold medallist Seremaia Tuwai was lost for words at Bishop Kempthorne Memorial School yesterday.

The Buca, Cakaudrove, native never expected the whole Nasinu community to host a celebration for him.

“I only knew my Newtown community will be hosting this celebration but I never expected the whole Nasinu community to be here,” Tuwai said.

“I’m speechless and I just want to thank everyone for their support for me and my family.

“Everyone coming in blue is just wonderful.”

Tuwai was escorted by the Newtown Rugby Club who carried him on a vatavata (special carriage) from his home to the celebration ground.

“I just can’t believe they actually made this special carriage for me.”

It was also a special moment for his maternal grandmother Tokasa Lewanitaci 68, who raised Tuwai until he was nine years old.

“Me and my husband (Tuwai’s grandfather)  Tomu Baramoa raised Tuwai when he was born until he went to attend Bishop Kempthorne Memorial.

“We are forever thankful to coach Ben Ryan who identified Tuwai and nurtured him to be a successful rugby player.

“He always tell us that one day he will don the Fiji jersey.

“When Fiji won gold in Rio I was very happy and I just thank God for his gift.”
