Marica Kuru-Tavualevu will never forget the night her husband last left their home at Vunitogaloa, Rakiraki for a fishing trip.

It was his job and as usual Varayame Tavualevu went fishing with a group of six men including his son in the sea close to Tovu Island on Wednesday night.

She had never imagined that this normal fishing trip would result with the tragic news of his disappearance to arrive home instead of him.

“I know he will not come back alive anymore, but I want to see his body arrive home,” she said.

“It’s been three days (until yesterday) now and my son along with his colleagues and Police are out in the seas hoping to find his body.”

Mrs Kuru-Tavualevu said her 23-year-old son; Epeli Saukuru told her what he saw.

“They left home at about 7pm on Wednesday and at about 9pm were out in the sea in their boat,” she said.

“My son said they prepared for their dive but as usual they prayed.

“My husband led the prayer.

“After that they dived in while my son was on the boat handling it.

“My son says they were only about ten metres away and after their first dive came out well, he could see their torches.

“But in a while when he went close to check, he and others saw only the torch floating and the fishing gun. He was gone.”

She said her son only returned to tell her that.

“Right now my son and almost all the village help are out in the sea helping the Police conduct the search. I am not scared to send him but he wants to see his dad’s body, so do I,” she said.

The couple had been married for 24 years and Mrs Kuru-Tavualevu said it was hard to live without him.

Fishing was the only source of income for the family and now the family is yet to decide on their future. The focus now is only to search for the body.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the Police were continuing the search.
