Minister for Health and Medical Services, Rosy Akbar.

One of the two baby girls that was abandoned at the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital is in a safe home.

The other baby remains in the hospital.

This was confirmed by Minister for Women, Children and Poverty, Rosy Akbar.

Ms Akbar said at the moment only these two babies were in their care.

The two baby girls, 28-days-old and 17-days-old, were abandoned at the Morrison Maternity Unit of the CWM in Suva. Their mothers walked away after they were born.

She said: “While in the care of the safe home, we continue to provide for their needs in ensuring their welfare is key priority.

“While the babies were still in the hospital, we applied for a court order that gives the director of Social Welfare to be their legal guardian.”

The minister said the next step would be for the Department to attend to the application processes for adoption.

“Once a match is found, contact is made and the process of placement is facilitated.”

Ms Akbar said this was covered in their 2016-2017 budget allocation under the Care and Protection Allowance programme.

“The programme assists children from low-income families, single-parent families, prisoner dependents, children living with disabilities and children under our residential care.”

The programme has a budget allocation of $300,000.

Ms Akbar said abandoning a child is denying the right to life that he/she deserves.

“There are service providers like Medical Services Pacific and Empower Pacific that provides counselling on such social issues,” she said. Edited by Maraia Vula
