Kuruleca: Replacing Textbooks With Tablets A Good Idea

However there should be more research done to determine whether this would affect a child’s learning development
Selina Kuruleca welcomes Government’s future plan to replace textbooks with tablets.
The director of Kuruleca Consultants` in psychotherapy, consulting, addressing mental health issues, research and training believes the Government’s plan will give students the ability to access up to date information and allow them to find meanings of words within seconds instead of using the dictionary or thesaurus.
The plan was revealed by the Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy, at the launch of the National Library Week in Labasa last Saturday.
However, Ms Kuruleca says there should be more research done to determine whether this would affect a child’s learning development.
“It is definitely a move in the right direction but it needs to be supported and thought thoroughly along with all the implications of its usage,” Ms Kuruleca said.
She said the Ministry of Education needed to ensure that Fiji had the proper infrastructure in place; the tools and applications and knowledge needed to facilitate it before replacing textbooks with tablets in schools.
