Former St Joseph’s Secondary School student Katalina Rakai said her choice of pursuing a career over a convent was following an advice her teacher Mother Louise gave her in school.

“My cousin had gone in and it broke my aunt’s heart every time I came home because she was determined that I would become a nun,” Ms Rakai said.

“But Mother Louise told me: ‘Don’t you go to the convent. I advise you to go and get yourself a career, work and when that’s done and when you feel the need to go back then become a nun.’”

Ms Rakai shared her memories during the school’s 60th Diamond Jubilee weeklong celebrations on Tuesday at the Waimanu Road school in Suva.

Through her experience, Ms Rakai also refuted the myth that nuns would force students to go to the convent after graduating, but she pointed out that this was not true.

“That was Mother Louise’s advice to me and so I’m still getting a career and have not joined the convent yet,” she laughed.

When asked to share one of her unforgettable memories while in school, she recalled an incident where she had to quieten the noisy class next door as she was a prefect.

“We had a table cloth and I wrapped my head and walked into the class and they turned around then there was absolute silence. Then when they realised it was me, they screamed and made more noise than before I went in.

“Mother Louise told me that if you become a teacher and you want to know what kind of teacher you are; sneak around and watch your students imitate you. I learnt some pearls from that which I treasure till today,” said Ms Rakai.

Ms Rakai said that the nuns taught her many valuable lessons that were needed to survive in real life and it was something that she took with her wherever she went.
