A 51-year-old grandfather of Vunicuicui, Labasa has been selling vegetables at Labasa market since 1986.

Jack Andrew has been selling produce from his backyard.

The father of two also buys vegetables from farmers to complement his supply.

“I have been selling vegetables for more than 30 years at Labasa market,” Mr Andrew said.

“I love my work because I am the boss of myself.”

When questioned why he continues to sell even at this old age, Mr Andrew said he was doing business to support his family including three grandchildren.

Meanwhile, Mr Andrew said the recent change in weather pattern all over Vanua Levu had affected vegetable supply.

“Some suppliers told me that suddenly some bugs have begun eating vegetable leaves.”

He said when he arrived at the market 7am to buy vegetables the suppliers were selling at a higher price.

“I have no choice but to purchase since I have to keep my business running.”

He said when supplies were sold at a high price, the market vendors had to sell at the same price or a little bit higher prices to meet the cost.

Andrew said that despite of the change in the vegetable supply affected by various elements, he would continue with his business.
