Police have yet to give Dialogue Fiji a permit to hold a panel discussion on the sugar industry.

The non-government organisation  claimed it had lodged an application after Police stopped a panel discussion at the Pearl South Pacific Resort in Deuba because it had no permit.

The event was funded by the European Union but the organization was funded by Australia and other donors, Dialogue Fiji Executive Director, Nilesh Lal, said. But he declined to  say who the other donors were.

Mr Lal said they had lodged an application at the Central Police Station in Suva yesterday about 1pm after the incident on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro, said she had liaised with Central Police Station and was informed they had not received any permit application from the organisation.

Ms Naisoro said she would clarify the issue today.

Mr Lal said: “I don’t know what the matter is now because before, we used to hold similar discussions in the past, but there weren’t any problem at all.”

He said they had been informed by Police that they would receive a response earlier next week.

Mr Lal said the public forum was aimed to bring in all major stake holders to discuss issues regarding the sugar industry.

National Federation Party leader Biman Prasad was amongst those due to speak.

“We are not confrontational or political in nature, the aim is to bring all stakeholders together so that they can give their views on the way forward for the sugar industry,” he said.
