49% Of Graduates Were Women

In a first for the University of the South Pacific, 92 students graduated yesterday in various fields with degrees, diplomas and certificate.
The graduation took place in Lautoka
Of this, 49 per cent graduates were women which according to the acting vice-chancellor, Professor Derrick Armstrong spoke well for gender balance in education.
Professor Armstrong said the percentage should ultimately result in more gender equality in all aspects of the economy and society.
He said this during the ceremony at the Girmit Centre.
He told the students that they were now equipped with tools to help them forge ahead with a promising future.
“You have worked very hard and persevered, and can rightly feel proud of your achievements,” Professor Armstrong said.
“Graduations mark the start of a new and wonderful journey in life ahead. Growing from the seeds you have sowed during your period at the university.
“You are now equipped with the tools that will help you forge a future for yourself – in a future of immense possibilities—and a future that you will make with your own efforts.”
Seventy-eight per cent of students graduated with postgraduate qualifications which included 44 students graduating in Master of Business Administration (MBA).
“You should join the other 40,000 alumni by becoming good ambassadors of the university and good role models in your countries,” he said.
He challenged the students to live a life of integrity and moral values and to uphold the most important principle of the University of the South Pacific – excellence, throughout your life.
