The Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam (TISI Sangam) reached another milestone in its investment in education and health when it opened its third Sangam School of Nursing College in Samabula.

Despite the internal conflict between rival factions to control the organisation, it has not drastically affected its various development programmes.

The third nursing college opening event had happened without a hitch.

It is a testament of the resilience of the organisation built over the years by the pioneers and successive leaders since 1926.

Sangam historical records show the concept of forming this organisation was first conceived by one of the very pious South Indians, an ex Policeman, Kuppu Swamy Naidu who arrived in Fiji from Madras by the ship Sutlej III on April 27, 1912 and was assigned to work in Yaladro, Tavua, in the estate of R.D.Francis as an indentured labourer.

Kuppu Swami Naidu during the five years ‘of his indenture period observed the atrocities suffered by ordinary and humble South Indians who were most disadvantaged, because of their late arrival under the indenture system. He thought of an organisation to protect them.

Today the TISI Sangam has become a dynamic socio-economic, cultural and educational organisation developing its members to achieve Sangam aspirations through constant interactions and education.

It’s stated mission is to educate and inspire Sangam members to recognise their identity and contribute to the development of a dynamic society in its cultural heritage, unique, self-reliant, and a valuable stakeholder in the development of a multicultural nation.

TISI Sangam has lived up to its vision and mission. Not only Sangam members have benefitted from its education programme but others too. In fact the whole country has benefitted.

With the increasing need for professional and quality medical services across the country, the TISI Sangam continues to play a crucial role in this sector.

It was double celebrations on Thursday. Not only did they open a new nursing school in Samabula, they also introduced the  new Bachelor of Nursing (Bridging) programme.

In Labasa, the same Bridging programme was launched in June.

It provides opportunity for serving nurses to upgrade their qualification.

Candidates are expected to graduate with more knowledge and better practical skills, which will make them more competent in their respective fields.

The contribution by TISI Sangam complements the efforts by the Government to upgrade the quality of our health and medical service.

There is a limit on how much the Government can stretch the Health budget. So when  an organisation, like the TISI Sangam, steps in to help, it’s a wonderful gesture of dedication and commitment to this nation.

Today we salute TISI Sangam for its contribution to the nation and wish its success will continue for many years to come.
