Education Minister Mahendra Reddy on Thursday highlighted the foresight and sacrifice of the founding father of Turagabeci Primary School in Nasau Village, Wainibuka when opening new facilities for the school.

“I have been informed that the transformation of this school and its growth from classrooms with bamboo walls some 26 years ago to the erection of its first few two classrooms and teachers quarters in 1994 was all due to the tremendous inputs and sacrifice of the people of Naloto,” Mr Reddy said.

“You had gone out, worked in the Pine scheme farms, worked as sugarcane labourers for years without pay and had the money earned from your labour invested into this institution; I salute you.”

The management, community and students of Nasau were all smiles when Mr Reddy officially opened the new teacher’s quarters and library building for the school.

The school in Nasau Village is about 60 kilometres from Suva, in the interior of Wainibuka, Tailevu and has a roll of 67 students.

“I want to thank the management and all those who have toiled and sacrificed to see the fruition of your sweat, blood and tears today,” Mr Reddy said.

“I also want to assure you that the Government of the Day is here to support you and to ensure that your vision and dreams are achieved.

“Your investment in education will not be in vain and we are here to see to it.

“The Ministry is working towards identifying and upgrading facilities and infrastructure in the interior rural areas so that the students in these areas have the same accessibility to basic facilities as the students in urban areas.

“We are here to look after all of you. These children belong to us and we are here to assist them and ensure they have access to the best facilities.”

He said the collective efforts of the people and the prioritisation of education in the vanua of Naloto is just an example of the level of importance the people of Fiji are placing on education.

Members of the community expressed their gratitude to the Education Minister and his delegation for their contribution towards the school.

“It is also noted that throughout the existence of Turagabeci Primary School, this is the first ever Government to have put in infrastructural development funds into the school,” Mr Reddy said.

“This goes on to show that the Government of the day is here for everyone and will continue its investment into the Fijian Education Sector to ensure the provision of accessible and equitable quality education for all Fijians regardless of gender, race, creed, social or economic stature or geographical location.”

The Ministry of Education Heritage and Arts assisted the school with $45 000 which enabled the school to construct a double story teacher’s quarters, a new library block and the footpath to the school.
