She had to see it to believe it and what she saw shook her to her core.

Litiana Vueti’s cries of agony could be heard as she was greeted by a destroyed home and an injured son when she returned to Labasa yesterday.

Ms Vueti who is employed as a nurse for the Fiji Sugar Corporation Mill in Labasa was away for a funeral gathering in Lautoka when her three bedroom home was burned on Tuesday night in Labasa.

“I had just reached Lautoka at my cousin’s place when I got a call from our chief engineer, Tevita Ravulo, informing me of the fire,” Ms Vueti said.

She said while she was still shocked, she thanked God that none of her family members died in the incident.

Her 19-year-old son Seru Tuicakau said he was sleeping in his room when he started choking on smoke.

“I ran to the sitting room and all I could see were flames on all four corners,” Mr Tuicakau said.

“I ran to the other rooms to check my cousin and my aunty then I rushed outside.

“I came back in when I could not see my six-year-old brother, and I tried to search for him in the living room before I ran out again only to find him at a safe location.”

Mr Tuicakau who had suffered burns to his face and leg said there were five of them in the house when the fire occurred. They were his two cousins, his six-year-old brother, his aunt and himself.

The fire is believed to have started from the ceiling.

The Police and National Fire Authority are working together to investigate the cause of the fire.
