A temporary Bailey bridge, approximately 40 metres in length, has been launched adjacent to the existing Vugalei bridge located along the Kings Road towards Tailevu. The existing bridge structure went through emergency repairs in early July.

The Bailey bridge, which was assembled by Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) contractors, Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH), “will act as a diversion while the existing bridge deck will be demolished and reconstructed,” said FHH special projects manager, Eddie De Vries.

FRA will eventually replace the existing structure. A Bailey bridge is a temporary steel structure that is made up of a number of components and is assembled almost like a Mecano set.

The Bailey bridge will be used to allow safe travel over the Vugalei River before a permanent bridge is introduced.

“The Bailey bridge was launched in sections and the first launch was on the first of September when we moved the bridge across 10 meters,” Mr De Vries explained.

“We assembled the bridge on an adjacent bank and then launched the Bailey bridge in segments over the river. A new deck will then be built on the old bridge,” he said.

New road approaches to the Bailey bridge will be constructed soon. The Vugalei bridge, which was temporarily reduced to one lane in July to enable urgent repairs, is located on Kings Road between Nausori and Korovou Town.

While there are no permanent traffic restrictions leading up to and over the Bailey bridge, Mr De Vries added that it is “always advisable to drive with caution when temporary traffic signs are present and when approaching work sites.”
