The Fiji Sugar Corporation chief executive officer, Abdul Khan has confirmed that Fiji would be exporting a total of 32,000 tonnes of sugar in the second shipment for this season.

“The second sugar shipment for this season is expected to be carried out on the 25th of this month and we are looking at shipping 32,000 tonnes of sugar,” Khan said.

Mr Khan said the crushing season was going well in all the operational mills.

“As of this Tuesday we have processed just 572,000 tonnes of cane and produced just less than 60,000 tonnes of raw sugar,” he said.

“At this stage about 20,000 tonnes of sugar is estimated to be shipped out from Labasa Fiji Sugar Corporation mill.”

He also said the rain in the past weeks though had affected the cane supply in some of the mills.

“However, we have now seen some better weather and the supply of the cane has improved, thus allowing consistent mill operations.

“To date and considering the difficult season due to the damage done by Tropical Cyclone Winston, Lautoka and Labasa have been performing well.

“While considering the performance of the mill compared to last year, Labasa mill is on par while Lautoka and Rarawai mills have not been as good.”

He said at this stage they are making the first payment being the delivery payment.
