Passengers and drivers escaped serious injuries on Seaqaqa Highway yesterday in what could only be described as a freak accident involving five trucks and a Hilux.

Around 8am a lorry allegedly hit a white Hilux at Makomako causing it to veer off the road and into a ditch.

Witnesses say after some time, the driver of a green-coloured lorry parked in the middle of the road in an attempt to offer assistance.

Meanwhile, an empty blue truck returning from Labasa Mill allegedly tried to bypass the green truck and bumped into it.

At this time, another empty truck returning from the mill tried to move away from the green truck.

While this was happening, another fully-loaded lorry on its way to Labasa tried to avoid the green truck but was a little too late in doing so because of an alleged brake failure. As a result it bumped into the said loaded truck.

Two fire trucks from Labasa arrived to assist those who were trapped. The freak accident caused a traffic jam.

Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro said it was very fortunate to note that no one was seriously injured.

“However, we are still greatly concerned that the accident occurred and with initial reports indicating it was caused by one of the loaded trucks,” Ms Naisoro said.

“We are asking drivers to be cautious and be vigilant at all times.”

The allegations will be proven through investigation. There needs to be better care by everyone if we are to avoid similar incidences.Edited by Ranoba Baoa
