The Nasinu Rugby Union club competition has been a success, says their president Paula Biu during the quarterfinals at Queen Elizabeth Barracks ground in Nabua yesterday.

The former Flying Fijian prop told SUNsports, it was a big achievement for the organising committee since the Nasinu Rugby Union competition was revived this year.

The quarterfinals saw Vodafone Fijian 7s halfback and Olympic Games gold medallist Jerry Tuwai help Newtown score a comfortable 20-7 win over Colo-i-Suva.

Biu said Tuwai’s presence was a big boost not only for Newtown Rugby Club but also for the NRU competition.

“I think it is the first time for him to play any sort of fifteens rugby after his involvement with the Fijian 7s team.

“It is good for us as someone like Jerry who has been on that level is able to come down and play for his club.”

Favourites Tacirua managed to overcome a determined Samurai Barracudas side 10-9 in the third quarterfinal.

Tacirua came into the quarters after they topped the table at the end of the three rounds of competition.

Tacirua head coach Tevita Tikoisuva said he had warned his players to lift their game in the quarterfinal.

“We talked about it a lot as we need to lift our standard when we come to the quarterfinals.

“I reminded players that despite being at the top of the table, the only thing that counts is to win the quarters.”

Tikoisuva added that he is grateful to the revival of the Nasinu Rugby Union.

Quarterfinal results: Bulavou 13-16 Uluinakau, Newtown 20-7 Colo-i-Suva, Tacirua 10-9 Samurai Barracudas, Matuku Youths 10-5 Caubati

Semi-final fixtures (next Saturday): Uluinakau v Newtown; Tacirua v Matuku Youths.
