National golf rep Abid Hussain successfully defended the Carpenters Motors sponsored Labasa Open Golf Championship title yesterday.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Hussain said there are potential golfers in Labasa and if moulded well they could become a force to be reckoned with.

He urged the 32 golfers that if they want to have a future in the sport then they should continue playing.

“Do not limit yourself to the Labasa Golf Club, go to Viti Levu and play against top golfers from renowned clubs,” he said.

“By challenging yourselves you can become better. I can see that there are lot of potential players, if you have that passion for the sport then go for it.”

Labasa Golf Club captain Vinod Chand applauded the big turnout of the two-day event.

“This is one of the largest we have seen so far and we continue to call on members of the public to come out if they have any interest in golf. This was a huge success and we promise to come out bigger and better next year.”

Carpenters Motors Labasa branch manager Ashok Maharaj said they were keen on promoting golf in the North.

“We need to keep tournaments going on here in the North to keep up the interest rather than letting it die out.”

Hussain is now preparing for the Fiji International in Natadola next month.
