The 2016 Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation Forum currently underway at Sheraton Fiji Resort on Denarau Island has been labeled a critical one.

This was the message from the Attorney-General, Minister for Economy and Communications, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, to representatives from 30 nations present at the forum.

Communications Ministers and other delegates attending the forum are here at the forefront of shaping the future of Information Communications Technology (ICT) within the Commonwealth.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, due to his commitments with opening of the new session of Parliament, could not attend the opening.

However, a recorded message by Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was played to the participants in which he highlighted why the forum was so critical.

“Over the next several days, we will have the opportunity to discuss a wide-range of topics that will shape the future of ICT development within the Commonwealth,” he stressed.

“Our leadership on these issues will help advance ICTs throughout our nations.

“It will help maintain the vital flows of information that drive economic growth and keep our citizens connected to each other, and the rest of the world.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the delegates represent a wide range of perspectives from nations at varying stages of development, all faced with their own unique sets of challenges.

“But what we share in common is a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of ICTs within our nations and throughout the Commonwealth,” he said.

“The Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation has played a key role in promoting sustainable as well as efficient ICT development in Commonwealth nations.

“Fiji’s own surge in ICT development is owed in no small part to our work with our Commonwealth partners to build ICT capacity and expand the reach of broadband services on a local, regional and international level.”
