The family of the woman who is an alleged victim of a fugitive on the run has moved to a secret location, fearing the safety of their life.

Police have confirmed they are providing protection for the family and are working around the clock to capture the fugitive.

The fugitive, Avinesh Kumar Raj, escaped from the custody of St Giles Hospital last Friday after he was admitted for evaluation as he was trying to harm himself following his arrest in Vatuwaqa late last month.

Raj who is wanted for obtaining financial advantage by deception is also wanted for questioning for three alleged rapes.

The woman had identified the escapee on the Fiji Police Force’s Crime Stoppers’ Wanted List published in the Fiji Sun. She fears for her family’s safety.

They have been living with relatives since Friday, worried about the suspect’s next move.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro has assured the family that all efforts are being put into finding the suspect and a special team has been tasked to do so.

“Our officers are doing all they can and the decision to refer him to St Giles for evaluation was done as he was harming himself during the interview process following his arrest,” Ms Naisoro said.

A statement from Police yesterday said that Raj uses different aliases and has been evading Police for some time.

“Anyone with information that could assist us locate him is kindly requested to call Crime Stoppers on 919,” Police appealed.

“We are again requesting information regarding Avinesh Kumar Raj who is also known as Vinesh Kumar Raj who is wanted for his alleged involvement in three rape cases and a bench warrantee for cases of obtaining advantage by deception.”

The worried woman claimed that on the night of the suspect’s arrest (August 30), the man told them that if he escaped again, he would burn down their house.

Her husband said the suspect had clearly stated that if he got arrested, he would find a way to escape, which he did so after 10 days of his capture.

According to an eye witness, the suspect was spotted early yesterday morning at two o’clock around the Vatuwaqa area with two other men.

“I know that this guy used to come to this area because he knows all the short cuts around here,” the eye witness said.

“I urge all media outlets to cover this story and expose this man for who he really is,” said the worried husband.
