Investigation Into Three-Year-Old’s Death Continues

Investigation into a three-year-old boy who died after a double washtub fell on him in Labasa continues.
This was confirmed by the outgoing Minister for Health and Medical Services Jone Usamate.
Ratu Meli Vakaruru Niumataiwalu of Wailevu, Labasa died on August 15.
The incident happened while he was playing with his only brother and cousins at a relative’s house at Y-Corner in Labasa.
His parents took him to the Labasa Hospital immediately after he complained of stomach pain and couldn’t stand well.
The doctor did scans and instructed the parents to give panadol to Ratu Meli as they returned home.
Later in the night, his parents took him back to the hospital, but Ratu Meli died an hour later.
“I had been informed by the Labasa Hospital medical superintendent about the assessment and investigation done,” Mr Usamate said.
“The ministry will get an update on this case.
He said people should be served well when they come to the hospital.
“The doctor is still working at the hospital and we cannot comment on the status of his job yet as investigation continues,” Mr Usamate said.
