More Speed Cameras For Our Roads: Minister Kumar

‘These cameras are not installed to punish people in any way, but to control them in terms of speeding and accidents.’
Thirteen speed cameras have been installed along the highways around Viti Levu with more to come.
This was confirmed by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Parveen Kumar after the opening of the new Parliament year in Suva yesterday.
Mr Kumar said these cameras are installed to monitor the speed of drivers on our roads.
“This was a long, overdue project of the Ministry and we will be working on installing more speed cameras in many other locations,” Mr Kumar said.
“We have installed the cameras where high risk of speeding occurs along the highways.
“We have to locate areas where we can install more cameras so our roads are safe for all road users,” he said.
“These cameras are not installed to punish people in any way, but to control them in terms of speeding and accidents.
“We simply cannot have our enforcement officers in corners of the country monitoring the drivers so these cameras will assist us to control the drivers,” Mr Kumar said.
He confirmed while there are 13 speed cameras already installed, the Ministry of Transport is expected to install seven more cameras throughout the country.
