For the first time since 1984, the annual Sigatoka Bilibili Race will not be staged this year.

Co-founder Bob Kennedy and a group of Coral Coast hoteliers initiated the event as a simple fun event 32 years ago.

But the low water level at the Sigatoka River has forced the organizers to cancel the event.

“After a thorough inspection of the Sigatoka River it has been regretfully decided that this year’s event cannot take place,” he said.

“At this stage we cannot confidently plan for a quality event and race day. The lack of recent heavy rain to date has caused the river level of water to drop to a point where “sand bars” now are above river water level.

The start area has one big sand bar at the Laselase village side of the river, with the river so shallow cannot operate the Marshall boat or hold most of the river events.

“We regret any inconvenience the may caused as we know that the majority of our participating resorts have already begun preparation to defend their tittles this year,” said host Warwick Fiji Resort Brad Downton

The event has been a major drawcard for the hotels and resorts located along the Coral Coast and some from as far as Nadi and Suva who all geared up for the event which has become a major tourist attraction in recent years.

“Obviously I am very disappointed that the event has to be cancelled but at the end of the day the safety of the contestants will always take precedence over the event itself,” said Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort general manager Peter Hopgood.
