Six locals are eligible to apply for the Vodafone 7s head coach position vacated by Ben Ryan after the Rio Olympics last month.

One of the criteria of applicants vying for the job are they must have World Rugby Level Three coaching qualification.

Alivereti Mocelutu, Viliame Gadolo, Samuela Domoni, Senirusi Seruvakula, Saiasi Fuli and Sale Sorovaki all possess Level 3 accreditation.

FRU development manager Sale Sorovaki said though all six specialise in the 15s code, it is their decision whether to apply or not.

“These are the only six local coaches that have this Level 3 qualification,” Sorovaki said.

“They are eligible but their accreditation is for 15s rugby. I am not sure whether they will want to apply, it really is down to them.

“Personally, I myself am not sure and that is something I would not want to release but as far as whether these coaches will apply for the position is a different story.”

With 16 days to go until the application for the head coach closes, the door is still wide open for any candidate who fit the qualification and work experience expressed by the FRU.

FRU media officer Talei Mow said the position is open to anyone locally or abroad.

“Anyone can apply for the position, it is open to everyone,” Mow said.

“If they feel they have what it takes to do the job then they can apply but at the end of the day, FRU will have the final say.”

Fiji National Sports Commission chairman Peter Mazey said whoever the FRU pick, the chosen candidate would have to have an international qualification and reputation.

“There has been no salary decided in regards to the new 7s coach but FRU will have to go through a shortlist and interviews before it is brought to us,” Mazey said.

“It really depends on who FRU choose, whoever it may be they have to have an international qualification and reputation.

“If they are of international quality than we will work to decide on the salary.”

The head coach will be responsible for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Fiji will defend the World Sevens Series starting with the first cluster on December 2-3 in Dubai and a week later Cape Town, South Africa.
