The Fijian Government has expressed its appreciation to the World Food Programme (WFP) and its partners for helping our affected communities.

This was after the devastation made by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Dr Josefa Koroivueta said: “On March 4, the Fiji Government made a formal request to the WFP for food assistance.”

“Based on locally identified severe needs, WFP’s launched an emergency response operation valued at USD$3.4m (F$7.03m) consisting of cash-based food assistance to address the immediate needs of 72,000 cyclone survivors.

He was officiating at the United Nations WFP Joint Tropical Cyclone Winston Emergency Response Lessons Learned Workshop at Novotel Suva Lami Bay Hotel Convention Centre in Lami, yesterday.

“Following initial consultations with key partners a targeted food assistance intervention through cash based transfers was recommended for a period of two months.

Dr Koroivueta said the transfer modality was programmed to improve immediate food access for the most vulnerable social groups living in the 12 hardest hit areas by the cyclone as prioritised by the Government.

The two day workshop will ends today.
