Inspired by her parent’s political background, Jyoti Singh, 24, made up her mind to become a lawyer at a very young age.

The second in the family to become a lawyer, Miss Singh said she was excited about her new journey.

She is the daughter of Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions general secretary, Attar Singh.

Ms Singh was admitted to the Legal Bar as a legal practitioner at the Suva High Court yesterday.

“It is a privilege to be a part of the Fiji’s Legal Bar,” Ms Singh said.

“Having grown up around people who are so outspoken and rights based, it made it easy for me to decide on what I wanted to do in life, what I wanted to become.

“I thought the law was the closest thing I could do to fight for the rights and support my parents.

“Political struggle is one of the main reasons that made me strong and become a lawyer.”

Miss Singh said she wanted to focus on all the fields of law before she decided to specialise in a specific field.

Her proud father said witnessing his daughter being the second family lawyer was every parent’s dream.

“What better can parents expect from such amazing children who worked towards achieving so much in life,” Mr Singh said after witnessing his daughter being sworn in at the Suva High Court yesterday.

“It is a proud day for me and the family seeing my daughter take oath and admitted to the Legal Bar of Fiji.

“I am very proud today as her father as both of my children are lawyers.

“Children living around political parents like my wife and I, they pick up the way and I would love to see her become a good lawyer fighting for the rights of people of Fiji.”
