Despite the rainy weather golfers were out playing in the Telecom Fiji sponsored- Fiji Senior Golfers Championship at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

Going into its 34th consecutive year the Fiji Senior Golfers Association is proud of the progress so far despite the wet course says, honourary secretary Malcom Patterson.

“The weather has not affected the conditions of the ground or affected the tournament itself,” Patterson said.

“We have been very lucky as far as overhead rain is concerned. We have been getting a few light showers, the course is very wet and this affects the distance the ball will carry but no we have been very lucky as far as the weather is concerned.”

He said the competition which requires participants to be over the age of 55 has drawn a total number of 32 golfers which has been the only setback.

“It was a little bit disappointing. In the past we have had a number of players in the 50s but for whatever reason we didn’t get that number this year. Over the first two rounds, scores were moderately good, the course had been very wet but nevertheless we are having a lot of fun.

“The Fiji Senior Golfers Association has about seven tournaments a year and this is the most important one. Having regular tournaments enable senior golfers to be in touch with one another, the total membership is about 190 members so we got a lot of golfers scattered all over the country.”

The championship ends today with a new winner to be crowned.
