The atmosphere was jolly as people cheered “Go Jerry Go” as Seremaia Tuwai made his way towards Buca village ground yesterday.

Tuwai who is a member of the national sevens team that won gold at the Rio Olympics was treated to a full i-Taukei welcome at his home soil.

Tuwai was dressed in masi and raised on a podium, a rite only accorded to chiefs. Members of the traditional bati clan guarded the sides of the Buca village road to ensure that no one interfered with the procession.

“I want to thank the Vunivalu na Tui Natewa, Ratu Ifereimi Buaserau, the Tui Kama, Ratu Seru Qalita and the people for rendering me this welcome,” he said.

His mother Seruwaia Vualiku who accompanied her son said she was in awe of the chiefly welcome her son received. She was moved to tears as she led the procession alongside her husband.

“I have only heard about this kind of welcome and witness it for the first time and for it to be accorded to my son is such an honour,” Seruwaia said.

“I would like to thank the people of Buca, Natewa and Cakaudrove as a whole for a welcome that is so great.”

The Tui Kama, Ratu Seru Qalita said they could not be any prouder of Tuwai.

He said Tuwai came from a long-line of warriors and his team’s win at the Rio Olympics was evident that this trait still survives.
