The Ministry of Education is now investigating an alleged sexual harassment of a female student at a prominent school.

The case surfaced after a concerned parent, who wished to remain anonymous, yesterday informed the Fiji Sun about the incident.

“I am concerned because I have three children who attend this school. If this is the case than I have no choice but to relocate my children to another school,” the concerned parent said.

The school comes under the umbrella of a prominent church. They refused to comment on the matter when contacted yesterday because they were unaware, but they said such matters would be dealt with by the school’s management.

Permanent Secretary for Education, Heritage and Arts, Iowane Tiko, confirmed that the ministry was aware of the alleged incident based on a report lodged to them by a parent.

“We have assigned a team from our ministry to carry out investigations. A team is currently interviewing the victim and parents, another team questioning the teachers at the school,” he said.

When requested if this newspaper could be given the green light to clarify the issue with the school principal, Mr Tiko said: “Don’t do it, the principal is already under pressure, don’t put more pressure on him.”

He said the ministry would be able to give more information about the alleged incident after investigations were complete.

An official from the school confirmed that a team from the ministry was at the school yesterday to carry out their investigations.
