A Primary School in Nausori celebrated Fiji’s cultural diversity by educating their students through skits, speeches and videos.

Sanatan Dharam Primary School Visama had a national cultural day celebration at their school portraying the diverse cultures in Fiji and the significance this holds in people’s lives.

Head teacher Abhilash Chand told the students on Friday that culture gave a person identity and meaning to their life.

Mr Chand said: “We must not make fun, look down or belittle any cultural practice or culture as they are different in their own way.

“We Fijians are proud to say that we respect each other’s culture and cultural celebrations and this is very well seen during our national celebrations, Diwali celebrations, Easter and Christmas celebrations.”

The chief guest, Member of Parliament Brij Lal, stressed cultural teachings started from home and the family played a key role.

Mr Lal said: “The family should love, care and guide their child and in return the child should respect and obey their parents and learn from their good habits, culture, religious values and tolerance.

“We have noted a lack of love, tolerance and understanding which is resulting in violence and children are often abused resulting in mental and physical violence.”

Year 8 student Varun Sharma shared his thoughts of how proud he was being in a country that recognised all diverse cultures and traditions.

Varun said: “I am proud to be a Fijian.”

Elenoa Cuvu, the head girl of the school and is in Year 8, said that she was proud to be part of a school that celebrated cultural programmes in which they highlighted and educated students about the diverse cultures in Fiji.
