Defending champions Encore took out the Gulf Harbour Marina Pirates Day Race from Musket Cove Island Resort to Beachcomber Island Resort yesterday.

But the Cook Islands based- superyacht did had a late start with Jig Saw and Take a break took early control until Encore, a 144 foot monohull blitzed the Malolo waters.

Captain Jono was overwhelmed that no other yachts were able to catch up with her.

“We have been on this board for the last 20 years and I have been participating in these races,” he said.

“The race is good and fun at the same time and besides there was the good weather.”

There were 20 crew members on board during the race with all dressed as pirates and threw water balloons at each other along the way.

Jig Saw (multihull) came in second while Take a Break (multihull) captained by Dave Cull managed to finish third.

This event founded by the country’s tourism icons, the late Dick Smith and Dan Costello Snr in 1984.

Beachcomber Fiji Island Resort manager Nemia Marama said the event has been growing bigger and better.

“There were 20 yachts in all sizes that took part and it attracted over 200 people.

This is one event yachties look forward to and it has been gaining a lot of revenue for this particular niche market.

Meanwhile, Bruce Climo took out the Beachcomber Island Resort to Musket Cove SUP Challenge 2016 yesterday. Climo who has been taking part in the event and finally won his first event where a total 17 participants took part.

“I feel ecstatic to win as it was my first time and glad to see the local boys are also part of the event.”

Serua lad Lesi Navuwai settled for second spot while Nadi based- Scott Dodd was third.
