Police in Labasa yesterday  charged a truck driver for careless driving.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the driver allegedly drove his truck-load of cane onto the opposite lane, which tipped over to its side later.

Police alleged that Vijendra Dutt, of Dogoru outside Labasa, had tried to make a right turn at the T-Junction near Wailevu Village.

Dutt said in an interview that he was grateful he escaped without injuries.

“There was a bus at the bus stop and I was trying to make a turn to go towards the Labasa FSC mill,” Mr Dutt said.

“I tried my best to avoid the load of cane from brushing up against the bus but the load was too heavy and the binding wire was loose. I also drove over many potholes.

“I feel happy that at least the seat belt I was wearing saved me from any serious injuries and nothing happened to the bus and its passengers.

“I have been driving lorries for 25 years and this is the first time I got involved in such an incident.”
