Kumar Captures All
Chief Photojournalist Ronald Kumar was honoured yesterday as the Fiji Sun celebrated 17 years of daily publication. Mr Kumar – now widely regarded as the country’s top news photographer – has been with the newspaper throughout those years. Photo 1: Cry for Justice a picture of a girl crying for justice at the funeral of her father, who was killed in 2007. This picture won Ronald Kumar the FAME award in 2007 and was also nominated in PANPA award in 2008. Photo 2:Shadow by my side a picture of a lady dumped at St. Giles by her family only has her shadow by her side. It was a picture that spoke a thousand words. This picture not only made front page but won 2003-2004 Human Rights Media Award.

Fiji Sun chief photojournalist, Ronald Kumar has captured it all – from murders to coups, funerals, natural disasters and celebrations. All from behind his camera lenses.

He is also the only employee to have been part of the Fiji Sun since it started 17 years ago.

Changes have been drastic since September 23, 1999.

Mr Kumar recalled how the newspaper was able to make a name for itself.

“During the coup of 2000 that is when the Fiji Sun actually built up momentum over the two dailies which had been there for years. Just a few months after it started it became the people’s choice because of the content of the paper.”

He believes that the family oriented philosophy of the Fiji Sun has made work both challenging and enjoyable.

“Fiji Sun is the only media company where you can go right up to the Publisher or to the cleaner and there is no barrier to do that. While people are professional, it still has that family concept. No barriers in positions and employee positions.”

Mr Kumar is inspired by the daily challenges he faces when out on the field. He is also grateful for the support from home.

His wife Shirley and two children, Rajiv and Alisha continue to be a pillar of strength.

With the demanding work load and long working hours, he said the understanding from home is always welcoming.

This was published as part of the Fiji Sun  17th Anniversary Lift-out.
