Ba are on course to win the Vodafone Premier League competition. This was after they beat Suva 2-1 in a pulsating clash at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori yesterday.

The loss was Suva’s first while the “Men in Black” have displaced Lautoka on top of the Vodafone Premier League point’s table. They now have 16 points for the first time while Lautoka have 14 points followed by Suva with 13.

What happened: Samuela Nabenia and Saula Waqa scored scintillating goals as a fired-up Ba side took control right from the start.

Both sides went into the match to get the maximum points in their mission to top the point’s standings in the last match of the first round.

Waqa gave them the lead in the third minute as Ba had more possession. They missed numerous scoring opportunities but Suva replied in the 41st minute from a free-kick taken by defender Filipe Baravilala. The Beqa native’s powerful kick gave Ba goalkeeper no chance at all.

Halftime: Both sides were locked 1-1 at half time.

In the second half, Ba were a better looking side as they took advantage of Suva’s feeble defence. Ba attacked Suva’s goal mouth on many occasions, only to have their shots going wide.

Their ‘never say die’ attitude paid off when Ba scored the winning goal through Nabenia when he slammed the ball into the net following a perfect cross from the left flank.

Star Turn: Nabenia was the star player for Ba. The hardworking striker was calm on attack and scored a perfect goal.

Big play: Ba’s midfield general Malakai Tiwa, as usual played a key game for the side. He dictated many of their moves from midfield which their strikers failed to capitalise on.

Comments: Ba coach Imdad Ali said: “We want to win the league title and we are working towards that.

“Our players took their chances well and that resulted in the win.”

Suva coach Gurjit Singh said: “We lost three key players in the transfer window that resulted in the loss.

“The departure of Benaminio Mateinaqara, Samuela Drudru and Jale Dreloa had really affected us. We will come back as we still have a chance to win the league title.”
