But hike in allowances recommended by Emoluments Committee

Parliamentarians will not receive a salary hike because the country is still recovering from Tropical Cyclone Winston.

But sitting allowances have been given big increases.

For example, current $150 a day for accommodation and meals will now go to $350 for those living beyond 30km from meeting venue and $30 per meal.

Standing Committee sitting allowance has been raised from $80 a day to $200 (including assistant ministers).

The proposed changes will have to be approved by Parliament.

The details are in a report, tabled in Parliament yesterday, of a Special Committee on Emoluments.

Committee chairman Brij Lal said: “We have seen the hardships faced by the MPs thus far and these adjustments are necessary to ensure that they are given adequate support in the pursuit of their duties.”
