Salvaging Kiro Maybe Not Worth Cost: PM

Efforts to salvage the RFNS Kiro are still unclear after it ran aground on Cakauyawa Reef off Nukulau Island in July.
However, the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama said outside Parliament yesterday, it may be a waste of resources and time trying to get the naval vessel floating again.
He said a report on the RFNS KIRO was expected to be out soon.
“I’ve told the Commander of the RFMF Military and also the Commander of the Navy again, have a look at it. Because we may be wasting a lot of resources and time trying to get it floated again because the way its sitting now, I think it’s beyond that.
“The Navy is still trying to get it floating again but as far as I know they are working on that and the investigation results will be coming soon,” Mr Bainimarama said.
Minister for Defence, Immigration and National Security, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola also said outside Parliament, that he would need time to look into the issue before making any comments.
The RFNS Kiro was one of the five navy vessels of the Fiji Naval Squadron which oversees the patrolling of Fiji’s exclusive economic zone.
