The Fiji Darts Association’s weekly competition is aimed at building up potential players who will represent Fiji to the first South Pacific Darts Championship in Vanuatu in 2018.

This Saturday sees the Vodafone Triples competition get underway at the Defence Club in Suva.

Association president Nyla Alfred said yesterday they are setting-up national competitions to groom players who are interested in playing in the championship.

“This is the chance for players who are interested in playing for Fiji to have a fair idea of what playing in a tournament is like,” she said.

“The good thing about this is that players don’t only play with the same players within their association but from others. So we have the Suva and Lami associations who have come together.

“Darts is a minor sport in the country and for us to be able to take part in this darts championship is a really big deal for us.

“It will be a first for us and we need to choose the best players who will provide competition against the other countries that will be taking part.

“So these competitions are good and we are happy with the response we have been getting.”

Alfred said, they are expecting 20 teams of three to take part in the Vodafone Triples competition which is shaping up to be a good tournament.

“We are expecting a good turn out this weekend. The teams will be mixed of both men and women so that will be exciting,” she said.

“I also urge people to come out to the Defence Club to watch and be part of it and if they are interested to play they can always join a team; so we are looking forward to the competition.”
